WNBA: Mitchell caps off two strong games for Phoenix
With the WNBA season officially kicking off, we take a look at how Aussies Rebecca Allen, Cayla George, Leilani Mitchell, Steph Talbot and Sami Whitcomb have fared across the first week.
The Aussie trio at Phoenix weren’t able to help their side to a win, as the Mercury went down by 10 points to the Dallas Wings. Mitchell was the star of the three, scoring 8 points, 1 assist and 1 steal in her time on the court as the point, while George scored 2 points, 5 rebounds and Talbot provided 2 points and 5 rebounds.
However, things turned around for Phoenix when they took on the Indiana Fever, bringing home an 85-62 point win. Talbot featured in her second match in the starting five, managing 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in a solid performance. Mitchell continued her dominant form with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists, capping off a great game, while George made 4 points in her time on court.

Sami Whitcomb had her first taste of official WNBA action, fronting up for the Seattle Storm as they went up against reigning premiers LA Sparks. The Storm were beaten in the final half, which ended up in a 10-point loss at 78-68. Whitcomb made the most of her minutes, scoring a Whitcomb-like 3-pointer, alongside 3 rebounds in 6 minutes of game time.
Whitcomb didn’t feature in Seattle’s next game, which saw them take a 5 point win from Indiana. Jewell Loyd went to another level with 27 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists for the Storm.
New York Liberty kicked off the official WNBA season, hosting the San Antonio Stars at Madison Square Garden. The Liberty were able to take away a 83-64 point win without star Aussie Rebecca Allen who had to sit out with some hip issues. It was a dominant effort from veteran Tina Charles who banked 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists, but the Liberty would be most pleased with their even spread of performers across the board.
