All Wired Up: Tell Donald Sloan I Said What Up
The NBA season has kicked off and knowing lots of fantasy owners, you’ll all be eager to action your trigger fingers and make a grab at free agents on your waiver wire from the get-go. In these “All Wired Up” posts, which I’ll endeavour to have up daily, I’ll look at the best performances from players who are on the waiver wire in most standard leagues.
Donald Sloan – Pacers (ESPN 61 percent, Yahoo 39 percent)
First of all, I hope you got the Entourage reference in the title. Secondly, who could’ve predicted that a third-string point guard would be one of the hottest players in fantasy basketball the second week of the season. Well, Donald Sloan is just that, riding that wave that is increased playing time, right into our hearts. When I was looking for today’s target for the All Wired Up column, I skipped over Sloan, because I just assumed he would be owned in more than 80 percent of leagues. I was shocked, more so when looking at Yahoo, to see how many leagues he was still available in.
Against the Wizards, albeit an overtime game, Sloan had 31 points (10-21 FG, 4-10 3Pt, 7-10 FT) with six rebounds and seven assists in 43 minutes and is now averaging 15.6 points, 1.8 three-pointers, 5.2 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 0.8 steals in 36 minutes and that sort of court time looks to continue with George Hill still “a ways away” according to coach Frank Vogel and C.J. Watson sidelined with a persistent foot problem. As I said all through the preseason, you drop three to four players from your roster by the end of the season, so you may as well have one spot dedicated to the hot player whose situation dictates them as a must own. If you missed the Tony Wroten boat, jump on the next best thing, the Donald Sloan express.
Courtney Lee – Grizzlies (ESPN 1 percent, Yahoo 17 percent)
I recently had a question sent to me for the podcast, asking who the most efficient shooter is so far this season. Instead of just going with a name off my head, I had a look at the numbers and was surprised to see that the answer was Courtney Lee. Consider these numbers. Lee is shooting 60 percent from the field on 10.0 attempts per game, 70 percent from deep on 3.3 attempts per game and has yet to miss a free throw, hitting all five of his attempts through three games. Now, obviously this is a small sample size, but Lee has looked good so far. In his return from concussion against the Suns, Lee scored 22 points (9-14 FG, 4-5 3Pt), with three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block in 39 minutes. Importantly, in the two games in which he’s been able to finish, Lee has played 36 and 39 minutes and is a key guy on the wing. In 12 team leagues, I’d definitely be adding Lee and I’d even consider it in 10 teamers, depending on your team makeup. In anything deeper, it’s an absolute no-brainer and judging by the ownership numbers, he’s out there in a lot of leagues.
