Sources: Bogut will play in Rio
Andrew Bogut is definitely suiting up for the Boomers at the Games starting next week, per multiple sources close to the situation.
The presumptive starting centre injured his left knee during Game 5 of the NBA Finals whilst contesting a close range shot by J.R. Smith. At the time, it was feared that Bogut would miss the Boomers’ quest for Olympic medal glory altogether.
Instead, it looks as though he will return in time for the Games which start on Saturday week.
Boomers coach, Andrej Lemanis, had previously stated that he would give the Aussie pivot as much time as possible to confirm his availability.
"It's a day-by-day process and he'll keep inching along. From a rules point of view you submit your team on August 5 so you have up until that date to name your final 12,” Lemanis said.
"So we'll give him as much time as is smart based on what's best for the team and how he is going. You would think by the time we move into the village on August 1 then we'll have a pretty good sign of where we are."
The news comes as a major boost for the squad, who have major hopes for an elusive Olympic medal.
Aleks Maric, who traveled as cover for Bogut, will return home next week.
Bogut will provide the Boomers with much needed interior defense, deft passing, as well as bone-crunching screens that will unlock a bevy of perimeter shooters.
During the past NBA season, in what turned out to be his last with the Golden State Warriors, Bogut finished with season averages of 5.4 points, 7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 blocks in 20.7 minutes per game.
