Champions League Basketball has landed with their first offering to the public being a 3-on-3 tournament (CLB 3X3) which launched in the nation’s capital on Saturday.
Canberra’s Westside Acton Park was the location for the inaugural event and it was perfect weather for a day full of outdoor basketball, with a sunny blue sky and lightly chilled wind.
The concrete court was surrounded by graffiti-decorated shipping crates and tunes blasted from the speakers above giving the tournament a real street vibe.
Food vendors situated in the shipping crates gave spectators a number of good vantage points to sit down and catch the action as they enjoyed a meal, beverage or both.
As per FIBA rules, each match went for 10 minutes or would immediately end if a team was able to score 21 points.
There was good a competitive spirit from all the competitors, with players going hard at each other but any inadvertent knock or bump quickly meet with an apology and high five.
As the rounds progressed the intensity on the court along with the feeling in the crowd, with hooting and cheering following each big shot. Day soon turned to night with the finals taking place under flood lights.
If you’re a hoops fan it’s well worth your while getting a few friends together and competing in the upcoming tournaments, it’s a well-run event and is sure to grow as word spreads.
Additional National Tour events have been locked in for Darwin and Sydney in June and November respectively, while other dates for Melbourne, Perth, Tasmania and Cairns are expected to be confirmed soon.
The tournament is FIBA endorsed and recognised by Basketball Australia. CLB 3X3 has categories for men, women, junior and wheelchair with the Open categories winning cash prizes and the junior teams receiving prizes containing basketball equipment and apparel.
