Year Two: How Alex Toohey is taking his offensive game to the next level
Alex Toohey impressed many when he broke into the Kings rotation as a rookie. This season, he looks poised to be taking it one step further.
Alex Toohey came through the junior ranks as one of Australia’s top 2004-born prospects, and as such, faced the burden of expectations when he signed an NBL Next Stars contract. He instantly emerged as one of the NBL’s top teenagers, averaging twenty-plus minutes for the Sydney Kings as a rookie. Toohey averaged 8.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in an impressive debut campaign, although the Kings endured a difficult finish to their season with a play-in defeat. The Canberra product had the option to enter his name in the 2024 NBA draft, but decided to see through the second year of his Next Stars deal, in an effort to bolster his draft stock.
"Talking to people around me and thinking what's best for me short and long-term, I've got a great situation with the Next Stars program in Sydney, so I'll stick it out with the Kings and the goal is hopefully I'll get picked next year,” Toohey told the Canberra Times.
"I'm over in the States doing some offseason training now, but hopefully next year I'll declare for the draft.”
