The 6'5 point guard permanently turned his back on the NCAA pathway after eligibility issues with Fresno State, resulting in McDowell-white to pursue his NBA ambitions via Germany after signing a four year deal with with German Pro A side Baunach back in 2017.
After not hearing his name called on draft day, McDowell-White committed to the Rockets for their Summer League campaign and training camp, signing an Exhibit 10 deal. It appears that the exciting guard has impressed enough to warrant the Rockets using one of their two-way deals on the exciting 21-year-old.
McDowell-White entered Summer League on the recovery trail from injury, managing a lingering foot complaint, yet the Rockets were supportive of the young Aussie.
“He has a very high basketball I.Q,” Batt Brase, Houston’s Summer League head coach, said of McDowell-White after their game against the Scaramento Kings. “He can knock down open shots and we wanted to start him tonight against the Kings.
“He has great I.Q. He can get others involved. I thought he had a good performance tonight with his minutes."
McDowell-White finished Summer League averaging 2.5 points and 1.25 assists in just 8 minutes per game across 4 games.
A tall point guard, and it is his playmaking abilities and high IQ that is sure to have endowed himself to the Rockets front office during training camp. It is something that McDowell-White affirmed when he spoke with Jonathon Givony prior to the NBA Draft.
“Teams have always been impressed by my ability to make everyone around me better and my overall playmaking skills, but I’ve really taken time to focus on becoming a knock-down shooter as well,” McDowell-White explained.
McDowell-White is the son of former Australian Rules footballer Darryl White, and has previously represented Australia on multiple occasions, including the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships where Australia finished in seventh place. He also took part in the 2014 adidas Nations Global and 2016 Nike Hoop Summit.
