WNBA: George and Allen make impact with Mercury and Liberty
Phoenix Mercury were able to secure a healthy win San Antonio Stars, while the Liberty were able to make one win of their two matches and Seattle suffered a loss to top of the table Minnesota.
The Liberty kicked off their week right, edging out a close win over the Chicago Sky. Starting on the back foot, the Liberty lost the first quarter. A dominant second term from New York saw them get out to a 17-4 run to put them on the front foot for the rest of the match. Allen was also able to bring some spark to this one, managing 8 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist. It was an even spread of performers for the Liberty, as all players who took to the court were able to make significant impact on the scoreboard.

Things didn’t go for plan for the Liberty later in the week when they came up against San Antonio Stars, suffering a 93-81 point loss. Despite being down early, the Liberty tried their best to comeback during the second and third terms, scoring 22 to the Star’s 11 in the third. However the Stars held strong, with the likes of Kayla McBride steering them to victory with a healthy 31 points to her name. Rebecca Allen wasn’t able to make an impact with her time on court, with her team suffering throughout in this one.

The Seattle Storm put up a good effort against the Lynx, but it wasn’t enough to combat the forceful team from Minnesota who took away a 93-82 point win. A huge effort on the boards from the Lynx saw them out-muscle this one from Seattle, as they were able to give themselves far more opportunities on offense. Sami Whitcomb wasn’t able to contribute much, scoring just 3 points for this match. Sylvia Fowles was the best on court, as she provided the Lynx with a massive 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Cayla George was the best of the Aussie trio at the Mercury, claiming 6 points and 6 rebounds. While Steph Talbot claimed 2 assists and Leilani Mitchell had 1 point, 1 rebound and 2 assists.
