We are now mid-way into March, and the madness is taking hold as the college basketball season ascends to its peak; the NCAA Tournament.
Australia will be well represented in the 2025 edition , with nine teams on the men’s side, and eleven women’s teams in the women’s draw, boasting talent from downunder.
Tyrese Proctor and his Duke Blue Devils earned a tournament number one seed in the East Region, having dominated the ACC this season, culminating in an ACC Tournament win despite missing the almost certain to be number one NBA Draft pick, Cooper Flagg, through injury. Alex Condon’s Florida have been almost as dominant in the SEC, winning the championship and earning a number one seed also, in the West Region. Both teams are contenders, with their Australian stars well and truly on NBA Draft radars. At the other end of the spectrum, NEC Champions St John’s and Riler Parker will open the tournament in the First Four hoping to make waves.
On the women’s side, Kelsey Rees’ Oregon State are the early Cinderella story, having booked their ticket to the big dance courtesy of winning the WCC Tournament, an achievement only the Beavers themselves likely thought was possible. Agnes Emma-Nnopu’s TCU team enters the tournament as Big 12 Champions and Hayley Van Lith firing on all cylinders, and narrowly avoided being named as a number one seed.
All eyes from a WNBA Draft perspective will be on Georgia Amoore and her Kentucky team who were given a number four seed. A big showing in the NCAA Tournament from Amoore is likely to help solidify her potential to be drafted inside the top ten.
Will we see an Australian reach the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, the Final Four, or dare we say it, possibly winning the whole damn thing? Only time will tell.
In the meantime, here are all the Aussies whose teams will feature in March Madness action, and for good measure, we outline all the those who came away with individual conference accolades too.
