Ryan Broekhoff signs two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks
|Jul 6, 2018|
Aussie swingman Ryan Broekhoff has agreed to a 2-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, Shams Charania of Yahoo reports.
The Olympian joins the Aussie contingent in the NBA for the first time, after previously playing the entirety of his proffessional career overseas. His most recent club being Lokomotiv Kuban in the VTB United League while also participating in the EuroCup.
Coming oput of contract with Lokomotic Kuban after last season, Broekhoff had multiple offers from European teams on the table, most notably a 3-year offer from Turkish club anadolu Efes Istanbul, and a 2-year offer from Russian side Khimki Moscow. He had also attracted growing interest from the Brooklyn Nets who appeared to be set to offer him a contract.
After staring at Valparaiso college for four seasons -- including averaging 15.7 points as a senior -- the Aussie went undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft before signing a deal with European powerhouse Besiktas in Turkey.
A regular with the Boomers, Broekhoff was a member of both the 2014 World Cup squad and also took part in the 2016 Rio Olympics
At 6'7", Broekhoff has the abiliity to play multiple positions on the wing. With a long wingspan, he brings a strong defensive reputation with him to the NBA. The signature element of Broekhoff's game though, is his shooting from deep.
He shot a blistering 50 percent (yes, really), from three during his last Eurocup campaign with Lokomotiv and has a career percentage of just over 44 percent. To put that in perspective, fellow Aussie Joe Ingles shot 44 percent during the 2017-18 NBA season, and has a NBA career percentage of 41.
The 27-year-old figures to play a decent role in Dallas moving forward, as the franchise looks to rebuild around Dennis Smith Jr and the recently drafted Luca Doncic.
