Ryan Broekhoff scores his first NBA points in record time

Ryan Broekhoff had waited years for the opportunity to play in the NBA, but after signing with the Dallas Mavericks in the off-season, he wasted no time in making his NBA debut in Dallas' season-opener against Phoenix.

With just 2:52 remaining in the first quarter and with the Mavericks trailing the Suns by 7, Broekhoff was injected into the game to replace Dennis Smith Jr. Finally, after going undrafted in 2013, and spending 5 years shooting the lights out in Europe, the former Valparaiso and Lokomotiv Kuban (Russia) star officially became Australia's 20th NBA player.

Broekhoff's next milestone was to score his first points, and he would do it in record time.

He missed his first scoring opportunity, a three-point attempt, on Dallas' first possession after checking in. Yet after just 47 seconds on court, the 2018 VTB United League three-point shootout champion was found wide open by Devin Harris in the left corner in front of the Mavs bench. Feet set, he let fly with his near flawless shooting action with Suns forward TJ Warren running at him to challenge the shot. The ball found nothing but the bottom of the net.

The 6'7 wing would go onto play just under 4 minutes, unable to add to his solitary triple as the Mavericks were overrun 100-121. However according to NBL Facts, Broekhoff not only made history by becoming Australia's 20th NBA player, but he also became the fastest from down under to score his first points.

Broekhoff nudged out David Andersen - also a former Frankston junior - who had previously achieved the feat of scoring in just his first 1:04 on court, an achievement that also occurred in his first game for the Houston in 2009 against Portland. In that game, Andersen would go on to score 11 points with 5 rebounds in 19 minutes in an impressive display.

Despite the loss, it will be a game - and first score - that Broekhoff will likely never forget. Having shot the three-ball at a ridiculous 50.6% in EuroCup and 46% in the VTB United League last season, expect to see plenty more Broekhoff triples as the season progresses.

Next up the Mavs return home to host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 11:30AM AEST on Sunday.
