Previewing the prospects of every Aussie in the NBA
The NBA 2022/23 season is finally here, and there is another strong Australian contingent looking to perform on the big stage.
A total of 10 Australians are locked in for the 2022/23 NBA season.
It’s another strong contingent, all of whom find themselves in different situations leading into what should be another epic year in the NBA. From Patty Mills to Josh Giddey, and Joe Ingles to Dyson Daniels, we take a look at the season prospects of every Aussie in the NBA.
Patty Mills (Brooklyn Nets)
2021/22 Stats | 29mpg, 11.4ppg, 2.3apg, 40% 3pt
Preseason Stats | 17.6mpg, 3ppg, 1apg, 20% 3pt
Patty Mills was ‘Mr. Fix It’ for the Nets last season, featuring in all but one regular season game and starting in over half of those fixtures. He was an iron man in a team that had a raft of injuries and it meant he delivered the second-best scoring season of his career in regards to points per game.
Unless injury strikes the Nets again, Mills’ numbers are likely to see somewhat of a decline, however, don’t fear Aussie hoops fans, because the Boomers legend will still be an incredibly important energy player off the bench for Steve Nash.
Cam Thomas’ impressive preseason could impact the size of Mills’ role during the regular season, with he, Thomas and Seth Curry likely to share the bench backcourt minutes. Curry and Joe Harris will miss the start of the season, which means the Aussie is likely to have an increased role in the early going. The addition of Royce O’Neale isn’t likely to impact Mills too much, as the former member of the Jazz normally plays an undersized forward role.
Josh Giddey (Oklahoma City Thunder)
2021/22 Stats | 31.5mpg, 12.5ppg, 7.8rpg, 6.4apg
Preseason Stats | 22.6mpg, 14.2ppg, 6rpg, 6.6apg
If the preseason is anything to go by, Josh Giddey is ready to take another big step in the NBA. His rookie season showed that the Thunder have found a star of the league, and although he won’t have future running mate Chet Holmgren with him this year, Giddey should give Oklahoma City fans another reason to believe.
