Mitch Creek nets 10-day contract with Brooklyn

Mitch Creek left Australian shores with one goal in mind, to become an NBA player. That ambition, that vision is now set to be realised with the former Adelaide 36ers star signing a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets.

Speaking with The Pick and Roll in Long Island back in December, Creek questioned at the time whether venturing to America was the right move.

“I didn’t know whether coming over here would be the right or wrong decision,” Creek said. “I still don’t know."

Any doubts Creek have harboured are all set to be dispelled. He is set to become Australia's latest NBA player, and a record eleventh to play this season.

Having spent the preseason with Brooklyn before being waived, Creek had been toiling away with their NBA G League affiliate Long Island. He has played 25 games (including 20 starts) and averaged 14.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1 steal in 30.6 minutes per game while shooting an impressive 54.8% from the field.

A feature on the Australian national team since they finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Creek guided Australia to a debut FIBA Asia Cup gold medal, playing an integral role in the Boomers qualifying for the 2019 FIBA World Cup to be held in China this August. He has also enjoyed a short stint playing in Germany prior to making his transition to the US, and is in line for selection to the Boomers World Cup campaign.

Creek, who signed with NBL expansion side South East Melbourne Phoenix late last year, will look to make an immediate positive impact with the Nets. With a good showing, he could do enough to secure a further 10-day contract or be signed for the remainder of the season.

After backing himself in to realise his NBA dream, he is now just one more step away from turning that into a reality. When he hears his name called to check into the game, he will do just that. He will officially become an NBA player.
