Mason Peatling sets Big Sky scoring record with 54 point explosion

Mason Peatling did something no other Australian has ever done before in US College basketball, breaking through the 50 point barrier.

Eastern Washington beat up on NAIA school Multnomah 146-89 in the friendly confines of Reese Court in Cheney, and it was Peatling that took advantage of an undersized opponent in amassing a new Big Sky Conference record of 54 points.

The 6'8 forward Peatling shot a staggering 24 of 30 from the field while also pulling down 13 rebounds. However what made the feat even more impressive, was that he did so in playing just 24 minutes, such was his dominance against an inferior opponent. That's 2.25 points per minute played! He would go on to break the Big Sky record of 53 set by Willie Humes of Idaho State against Montana State in 1971.

Peatling scored 34 in the first half alone, falling just three points from the league record for a half, with his 24 field goals also a league and school record, while his 30 attempts broke a school record. It was his ninth double-double of the season as Eastern Washington set a program and conference record in racking up 146 points for the game as they improved their record to 6-3, with freshman Tyler Robertson adding 6 points with 7 assists - both new career-high's.

Peatling's haul of 54 points also set a new benchmark for Australian men in US College, eclipsing the previous best mark of 46 points set by Anatoly Kolesnikov (then known as Anatoly Bose) for Nicholls in a double overtime loss to Northwestern back in January 2010. Kolesnikov who is now a Kazahkstan national, would also deliver a second 40 point game that season, backing up with a 40 point outing against Sam Houston State in March 2010.

The only other two Australian men to have scored 40 or more points at this level are Alex Loughton and Ben Simmons.

Loughton posted a 45 point and 15 rebound game for Old Dominion as a sophomore in 2003 in a double overtime loss to Charlotte. Playing his lone season with LSU, Simmons compiled 43 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots in a dominant win against North Florida in December 2015.

While nobody else managed to rack up the kind of numbers Peatling was able to amass across the past week, Dejan Vasiljevic continued his brilliant senior year with Miami.

Vasiljevic turned in 17 points for the Hurricanes in their 88-74 win against Alabama A&M to improve their record to 6-3. He drained 5 of 6 three-pointers to continue his hot shooting, shooting just below 50% from beyond the three-point arc so far this season.

Miami's win was soured by the news that red shirt sophomore forward Deng Gak has been ruled out of the season after suffering a knee injury at training. It was the same injury that cut short his 2018/19 campaign, albeit sustained on the other knee. Gak could potentially receive a medical waiver as per NCAA rules to get a year back of eligibility since each of the last two seasons were cut short of the 30-percent limit of games played on the schedule.

Hunter Marks is making his own mark for Hartford in his second year, coming up with another big performance for the Hawks in their 71-63 win against Wagner. Marks led a balanced scoring effort from Hartford, adding a game-high 19 points (6-10 FG) that included 3 of 6 from downtown. He also came up with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, with the Hawks snapping a five game losing streak.

After Arizona fell short to number 8 ranked Baylor, Josh Green stepped up to help lead the Wildcats past Omaha 99-49 in a lopsided result. Green compiled 15 points (6-10 FG) with 7 rebounds and 3 assists as Arizona delivered a highlight-reel laden performance and return to the winners list ahead of their match up with Gonzaga.
