Mayen spent 2016 at the Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) where he further developed his game under associate coach Adam Caporn. At the CoE, Mayen played alongside some of the most talented young Aussies prospects such as Jack White (Duke), Will Magnay (Tulsa) and Angus Glover (Saint Mary’s).
Originally from Sudan, Mayen represented South Australia in the 2016 Australian under 20 national championships where he averaged 11.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 44% from the field. Representing his school at the 2015 Australian School Championships, Mayen played a starring role, averaging 24.75 points and 10.25 rebounds per game while shooting at an impressive 51%. The South Australian was recently named to be a part of the Emus selection camp squad for the Under 19 FIBA Oceania Qualification tournament, and also has experience representing Australia at the 2016 Albert Schweitzer tournament.
Standing at 6’8, Mayen is a long and versatile wing, who can get to the rim and shoot the three-ball. He has the ability to play the 2, 3 and 4 spots, with his size and versatility seeing him flagged as one of the best Australian prospects in the class of 2017.
As reported by Olgun Uluc, TCU's assistant coach David Patrick, is the Australian behind Mayen’s commitment. Patrick’s move to TCU was announced in April after a successful stint at LSU where Patrick helped secure the commitment of his God son Ben Simmons. Coach Patrick has a track record of attracting young Aussie prospects after spending time coaching at LSU and Saint Mary’s, playing a role in SMC’s recruitment of Patty Mills.
Lat Mayen will become a college freshman for the Horned Frogs at the start of the 2017/18 season.
