Kyle Lowry withdraws from World Cup USA squad
Toronto Raptor guard Kyle Lowry unfortunately announces his withdrawal for the upcoming FIBA 2019 World Cup.
The point guard had offseason thumb surgery done, to repair a torn tendon, and confirmed the situation on his Instagram account earlier today:
This is an status update message regarding the 2019 Fiba World Cup.
I was hoping be cleared and ready for the tournament but I Was not cleared for full basketball activities. I was hoping to be available in time to help my country in their quest for gold this upcoming tournament. I love playing for USAB but i have to sit this one out and support the team from home. At the end of the day I believe the men that are playing will be great and will win the gold for our country... GO USAB!! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Lowry was on the 2016 squad that clinched gold in the Olympics, and his unavailability further depletes the veteran depth on this iteration of Team USA, opening the door wider for Australia to obtain a medal. At the same time, it creates further disappointment for the upcoming exhibition games.
