How Dominic Gilbert's return to Croatia has opened new doors in Spain
After a tough 2020/21 campaign, a renewed stint back in Croatia has primed Gilbert for a new challenge in Spain.
A return to familiar surroundings was all that Dominic Gilbert needed to regain his footing as a formidable wing in the European basketball scene. Or so it seems so far.
A series of underwhelming performances, coaching turmoil and the pandemic formed a difficult 2020/21 campaign for the Sydney-raised Gilbert, who following a short stint with French outfit Blois to finish last season, arrived back to his Croatian base with no intentions to jump straight into a new situation.
Instead, he waited for the opportunity which he thought was right for him, one which - according to his estimations - was back in Croatia, with first-tier side KK Alkar. Prior to the 2020/21 season, Gilbert had played all his professional basketball in Croatia, before leaving national heavyweights Zadar for den Bosch in the Netherlands, and then finally finishing his year in France.
