It wasn’t always pretty, but the Australian Boomers have moved forward in their journey to the 2027 FIBA World Cup with a pair of wins. Victory over Guam sealed their passage into the next round of qualifying, and last Sunday’s win against the Philippines maintained their undefeated record through two windows of play.

That forward progress was a near-formality, but with results from the first round carrying over to the second phase, every win could be crucial. Some scrappy patches of play across both games will be quickly forgotten, with a side cobbled together at short notice ticking the boxes and keeping the Boomers on track on the road to Qatar. As always, the players that earn Australia’s ticket to the World Cup almost certainly won’t be the ones that head to the tournament; regardless, there’s still plenty to unpack from these latest games.
