Big city switch: Famous NBL names who have starred for Sydney and Melbourne
Matthew Dellavedova is making the big city switch, but he isn't the first famous NBL name
Matthew Dellavedova is set to join a number of high-profile names to have featured for both Sydney and Melbourne in the NBL.
The massive free agency news sees the born and bred Victorian take the Hume north to his new home in New South Wales.
Although it might take some getting used to, Delly isn’t the first big name to make the switch between the two major cities, with some famous faces having featured for both Melbourne, whether it be United or Tigers, and the Sydney Kings.
Casper Ware
Casper Ware shot onto the NBL scene after joining Melbourne United for the 2016/17 season.
The guard came with a strong résumé, having spent time with the Philadelphia 76ers and starring in France for ASVEL Basket.
Ware was an instant success down under, averaging 22 points per game in his first season, and stamping his authority early with a game-winner against his future club Sydney in his first handful of games.
He would go on to spend three seasons with the Victorian team, being named to the All-NBL First Team in each of those seasons and winning a championship in 2018.
It was ahead of the 2019 season that Ware made the big switch, joining new coach Kings coach Will Weaver in Sydney.
He instantly provided an impressive trio alongside Ja’Sean Tate and Andrew Bogut and it was almost enough to bring a championship back to New South Wales, however the minor premiers fell short in the Covid-impacted NBL Grand Final series.
