Alanna Smith surgery successful, expected to miss remaining WNBA season

The Phoenix Mercury released an announcement on Alanna Smith on Sunday, confirming that the forward had undergone surgery on her right ankle, and that the operation was successful.

Smith, who was drafted at 8th in the 2019 WNBA draft, had been sidelined with the ankle injury since early August. She is expected to take three months to recovery post-surgery, which will see her miss the remainder of the WNBA 2019 season.

The 6'4 Tasmanian forward played 18 games for the Mercury this season, averaging 1.1 points, 1.9 rebounds in 7.5 minutes of play, and a season-high 7 points scored in a loss against the Minnesota Lynx over early June.

The Phoenix Mercury played the Chicago Sky on Monday morning, and ended the game with a 86-94 loss. Australian guard Leilani Mitchell had a 4 points (1/6 FG), 4 assists and 2 rebounds on 28 minutes of play (box score).
