Adam Caporn’s basketball playing career was cut short due to injury, which led him to hang the sneakers up at 27.
“I finished playing with injury,” Caporn told The Pick and Roll recently. “I wasn’t set on coaching, I was, sort of, encouraged and started and thought I’ll do it as a hobby a little bit to stay involved in the sport.”
At 43, that hobby has definitely blossomed beyond early expectations; not only is he currently the head coach of the Australian Boomers, he’s also an assistant with the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
That hobby started in 2010 as an assistant at St. Mary’s Gaels, of which Caporn was a former player. He was the first Australian to play there after being recruited by Randy Bennett in 2001. Since then, Australians have become all too familiar with Saint Mary’s, and Bennett is still at the helm.
Caporn joined the Gaels as an assistant coach in Matthew Dellavedova’s second season and had nothing but praise for one of our favourite sons.
