When the Perth Lynx go on the road, you can often find the team’s unofficial ‘book club’, consisting of Anneli Maley, Steph Gorman and Ally Wilson, clustered together, engrossed in their latest read or comparing notes on their shared passion.

Recently, they’ve been reading The Girl Who Fell from the Sky, Emma Carey’s memoir of how she rebuilt her life after surviving a skydiving fall from 14,000 feet. Carey became a paraplegic after the accident and went through extensive rehabilitation to learn to walk again and years of litigation to recover financially.

Ultimately, it’s a tale of perseverance and finding joy.

“We’ve been going through some good autobiographies, which is nice, and this one is really interesting,” Wilson tells The Pick and Roll.

“It gives you a different perspective on life. When you think things are tough, they’re probably not in the scheme of things.

While not as dramatic as Carey’s upheaval, Wilson has been on her own journey to rediscover joy and purpose, and as she’s rediscovered her love of the game, the results have flowed.
