2024 WNBA Draft: Aussies set to hear their names called
We could be seeing three Australians drafted to the WNBA in a couple of days.
It’s that time of the year again, when dreams are turned into reality. There will be 36 selections in the 2024 WNBA Draft, which gets underway on Tuesday morning (AEST), and there will be some Australians waiting and hoping to hear their name called.
Isobel Borlase, Nyadiew Puoch and Jaz Shelley have been on the radar of WNBA teams for some time now. While Borlase and Puoch may go as early as the second half of the first round, Shelley’s tremendous final season at Nebraska has her in with a strong chance to be selected perhaps in the second round.
It must be mentioned that fellow Aussie Georgia Amoore, who was likely to be selected in the first round, has decided to stay in college for another year. After an incredible four years at Virginia Tech, she has transferred to Kentucky, following coach Kenny Brooks to the Wildcats. It’s exciting to think about what Amoore could produce in another season of college basketball.
While all eyes will be on Caitlin Clark, who is set to join Kristy Wallace in Indiana as the number one pick, there’s no doubt the Aussie trio has ridiculous upside.
Isobel Borlase
19 years old | Guard | Adelaide Lightning
It really is hard to fathom that Borlase is still just 19 years old. The way she plays the game is that of a seasoned veteran, and there’s no doubt she’s ready to take the leap to the WNBA. Obviously, her role will be reduced in the WNBA compared to what she was tasked with for the Lightning this past season (averaging 31 minutes per game), but she has the strength and smarts to compete from the jump.
