Opals secure a number 1 seed for the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2020 draw
The Australian Opals have maintained their position as the number 2 ranked nation in FIBA's latest World Rankings released today.
Having bowed down to Japan once again at the FIBA Asia Women's Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last week, and finishing third behind Japan and China at the 2019 FIBA Asia Cup, the 2018 World Cup silver medalists have secured a number 1 seeding for the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments draw courtesy of their work number 2 ranking.
The top-seeded teams include the current Olympic and FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup champions, the USA, the FIBA Women's EuroBasket reigning champions, Spain, and the FIBA Women's AmeriCup finalists, Canada.
The draw, to be held on 27 November at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball, FIBA headquarters, will sort the 16 teams into four tournaments, where the top 3 from each group will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Despite having already secured qualification as World Cup Champions, the USA will be taking part in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, as will Olympic hosts Japan who are also secured of a place.
