Mangok Mathiang signs NBA two-way deal with Charlotte Hornets

It's not exactly an NBA signing yet, but another Australian has taken that one step closer to a full-time NBA roster spot.

Sudanese-Australian forward Mangok Mathiang, who last played in Louisville, has been reportedly signed by the Charlotte Hornets to a two-way deal, according to The Charlotte Observer's Rick Bonnell.

The two-way deal is a relatively new wrinkle in the NBA, and allows NBA teams to sign two additional players beyond the standard 15-man roster. These two players are allowed to move to and back between the NBA team and its G-League affiliate --in this case, the Hornets and its G-League team, the Greensboro Swarm-- and when called up to the NBA team, to play up to a maximum of 45 days, before a decision is made between either retaining, or waiving said player(s).

Details of the contract are unknown at this point, but players on a two-way contract should make more than the maximum a G-League player not on a two-way deal makes ($75,000). The exact salary will depend on the amount of time Mathiang spends in the NBA (details).

Mathiang recently played in the Orlando Summer League with the Hornets, averaging 4.4 points and 5.0 rebounds over five games (stats), and had a standout performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It's likely that Mathiang spends his time in the G-League, while awaiting his opportunity, especially if injury strikes.
