EuroView: Motum makes his mark as Broekhoff and Lokomotiv extend streak
Brock Motum was at his scoring best in Lithuania, while Ryan Broekhoff and Lokomotiv Kuban extended their amazing winning streak across Europe over the weekend.
Behind an equal game-high 19 points from Brock Motum, Anadolu Efes Istanbul withstood a late challenge to defeat Pinar Karsiyaka 89-77. A big third quarter set up the win for Efes, giving them enough of a buffer to hold off a fast finish.
Motum went 8-15 from the field en-route while also compiling 5 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. His stellar play has helped Efes move up into 4th place in the standings, and riding some good form ahead of their EuroLeague game this week.
Nobody seems to be able to slow Lokomotiv Kuban who extended their winning streak to 25 wins after a runaway 49-75 victory over Enisey in the VTB United League. They would dominate the middle two periods, outscoring their opponents 36-14 to break open the game and cruise to yet another win despite shooting just 4-20 from distance [video highlights].
Ryan Broekhoff continued his good form with another solid display. Playing his role to near perfection yet again, the Rio Olympian added 7 points and 9 rebounds in just 19 minutes as the court time was spread around in a lop-sided contest. Boasting a 12-1 record, Lokomotiv maintain first place in the standings, half a game ahead of CSKA Moscow.
In Lithuania, Ben Madgen came off the bench to provide 10 points including 2 three-pointers and 3 assists as Lietuvos Rytas accounted for Dzukija 105-84. Rytas were on fire from downtown, raining down 16-27 triples, ensuring Dzukija could not maintain pace after a scintillating 32-13 third period [video highlights]. The big win lifted Rytas into second place in the standings, half a game ahead of Neptunas.
Baunach are on the cusp of climbing out of the relegation zone in the German Pro A following a big 103-82 win against 6th placed Trier. Very little separated either side for most of the game, yet the Young Pikes managed to dig deep and pull away late in the game. William McDowell-White was in excellent form, adding 12 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists in another encouraging all-round performance to help his side register their 5th win of the season.
Dan Trist came off the bench and delivered an offensive spark, but it was not enough to prevent Ourense falling short 75-77 to Coruna in the Spanish second division. Trist connected on 2-2 from downtown and 4-5 from the line to add 10 points and 4 rebounds in 22 minutes, yet Ourense lost the rebound count and gave up more shots that ultimately proved their undoing. They have work to do as they are tied in last place with three other teams, and will want to avoid the bottom of the table.
Joel Spear was at his efficient best as Nidaros defeated last-placed Centrum 70-94 in Norway. Spear shot 8-12 from the field on his way to logging a 22 point and 13 rebound double-double in another brilliant performance. He also chimed in with 5 assists and 2 steals to help the injury plagued Jets earn a win. Even head coach Luke Jenkinson took to the floor, playing 20 minutes for 2 points and 3 rebounds!
