EuroView: Madgen, Motum and Broekhoff all fired up

Ben Madgen, Brock Motum and Ryan Broekhoff all fired for their respective clubs in Europe across the past week.

A Ball-less Vytautas were not match for Lietuvos Rytas in their Round 15 contest in Lithuania. Ben Madgen was on fire from beyond the arc, draining 6-9 three-pointers on his way to recording 19 points with 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Rytas had six players score in double figures as they routed Vytautas 113-56. The contest was effectively over by quarter time, with Rytas racing to a 31-11 lead, and while last-placed Vytautas showed some fight in the second, a 62-23 second half destroyed them [video highlights]. The Ball brothers did not suit up for Vytautas, and are expected to take to their court in their next game.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul rode a big game from Brock Motum to register a 66-74 win over lowly Gaziantep. After a tight opening first quarter, it was Efes that pulled away over the next two to take a 21 point lead into the final period. However Gaziantep were not done just yet, unleashing a 22-9 final term, yet Efes held on for an 8 point win.

Back in the starting line-up, Motum was sensational, delivering a game-high 20 points as he shot a sizzling 8-11 from the field, including 3-5 from downtown. He also added 7 rebounds and 2 assists, and was the key driver behind the victory and ensures Efes remained inside the top 8 in the standings.

In one of the games of the round, Lokomotiv Kuban have taken down the previously undefeated CSKA Moscow in what is a massive road victory in the VTB United League. Despite a combined 31 points from CSKA's Nando De Colo and Sergio Rodriguez, Lokomotiv led from start to finish, blowing their opponents out in the final quarter. It was the first time in league history that CSKA had gone throughout a contest without leading at some point, with the 79-90 victory moving Lokomotiv into outright second place in the standings, trailing only CSKA by half a game [video replay].

Lokomotiv spread the scoring load with four players registering double figures, led by Dmitriy Kulagin's 17 points. Ryan Broekhoff was yet again his dangerous self, adding 14 points on 5-7 shooting, including 4 three-pointers and with 2 rebounds. He also played an important role defensively in helping slow down CSKA's talented scorers, helping restrict them to just 42% shooting from the field compared to Lokomotiv's hot 58% strike rate.

Broekhoff's team are the hottest team across Europe, boasting the longest winning streak by any of the major clubs and leagues, boasting a 23-1 record overall and 19 straight wins, including an unblemished record in the EuroCup.

In the Spanish second division, Dan Trist came off the bench to add 12 points and 4 rebounds in 19 minutes as Ourense dispatched Huesca 73-59. Orense was never seriously threatened, opening up a 6 point first quarter lead, and then pushed the margin out to 13 points at the last change. 208cm Trist is averaging 12.8 points on 55.2% shooting with 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game across the season to date.

William McDowell-White closed out 2017 with a massive performance in Baunach's 91-89 overtime win against Chemnitz in the German Pro A. The athletic point guard exploded for a game-high 28 points on 9-15 shooting that included 3-4 from beyond the arc. He also added 9 rebounds, 12 assists and 2 steals, finishing just 1 rebound short of a triple-double! McDowell-White had an opportunity to earn the win in regulation, but his drive was off target as the game went into extra time.

The young Aussie was not finished however, coming up big in the extra period. McDowell-White calmly drained four straight free throws int he final 15 seconds to edge his side ahead and earn a rare win. He was directly involved in 13 of Baunach's 20 points in the extra period, lifting them to just their second win of the season.

Joel Spear continues to post big numbers in Norway, however in his last start, Nidaros lost to Fyllingen 97-101. The South Australian poured in a game-high 28 points on 11-21 shooting, while also adding 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Despite his scoring prowess, Spear could not prevent Nidaros 7-10 record, just above the relegation zone in the standings.
