EuroView: Bunton rings in the new year with stellar form

Alexandra Bunton has orchestrated some huge wins for her Russian side Dynamo Moscow to kick off 2017 in the Eastern European Women’s Basketball League (EEWBL). Awarded Eurobasket’s Round 6 Player of the Week, Bunton put some stellar performances on display to secure 3 straight wins in the EEWBL.

First off was Tsmoki-Minsk, which Dynamo Moscow made easy work of with a 95-61 victory. Bunton totalled a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the day. Australian guard Katie-Rae Ebzery was on point too, with 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

They then came up against Kibirkstis, which was not as easy of a task, only securing a 2 point win 58-60 on the road. Bunton’s 8 points and 9 rebounds came in handy inside the paint.

They were then set to face Avangard, and it was Bunton who orchestrated an impressive 78-57 win, leading the way with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Ebzery was also instrumental in this game, bringing in 10 points and a huge 7 assists.

In the local Russian league, Moscow could not secure a win against Enisey and lost 71-88. However Bunton’s form was still solid with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Tess Madgen too has been in blistering form, leading her side to 3 straight EEWBL wins to kick-start 2017. Sitting in 7th position for average points per game, Madgen has continued to stay true to form since joining AZS UMCS of Lublin.

In their first game back, Lublin took on Istanbul University and secured a 3 point win, 67-64. Madgen was instrumental, bringing in 16 points and 6 rebounds. The following day, Lublin had a massive win over Liepaja 85-63, with Madgen kept busy with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals. A 51-70 win against Astana Tigers was on the cards for the next day, as Madgen was rested to just a small amount of game time.

AZS AJP of Gorzow had a comfortable victory against Ostrovia 81-58 also in Poland, with some top performances from two of Australia’s brightest up and coming stars. Steph Talbot totalled 12 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists for the day, with fellow point guard Nicole Seekamp making 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

It was a comfortable win for Good Angels Košice in the EEWBL against Liepaja, making a mess of them with a 58-76 victory. Rebecca Allen provided 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Unpredictably, it was then a loss for Good Angels as they went down to Istanbul University 67-60. Allen was kept relatively quiet with 6 points and 6 rebounds.

With plenty of EEWBL action kicking off 2017, we now have Allen’s Good Angels sitting in 2nd position on the standings, Dynamo Moscow in 3rd, and AZS UMCS of Lublin sitting in 5th position.

Over in France, there were some concerns as Abby Bishop suffered a nasty unsportsmanlike foul committed on her in Tarbes’ 6 point loss to Landes. Despite this, the dominant forward top scored for the match with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and appears to be in good shape.

Uniqa Sopron secured an impressive EuroLeague win to kick off 2017. Coming up against Villeneuve, Cayla George led her side to a 10 point victory. George was on the Sopron’s best with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

In Turkey, it was a win for Hatay to resume their Turkish league journey for the year, with Nat Hurst bringing in a stellar performance. With 16 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists, point guard Hurst led the way for Hatay’s victory. However, Hurst was kept to just 5 points in their EuroLeague match against Bourges which resulted in a 68-55 point loss.

Campus Promete got off to a good start to 2017, knocking off Ferrol in the Spanish league 72-66. Nicole Romeo continues to perform consistently and solid, making 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in this one.
