EuroView: Allen and Madgen clash in overtime

It was a battle between two friends as Tess Madgen and Rebecca Allen fronted up against each other in the Eastern European Women’s Basketball League (EEWBL).

In a thrilling overtime match, it was Allen’s Good Angels Kosice who came out on top by just 1 point, ending at a 71-70 victory. Tess Madgen was however the star, as she equal top-scored with 13 points, accompanied by 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in a massive 43 minute effort. Allen was kept quiet, but pulled in 4 defensive rebounds for her side to bring home a crucial victory.

No rest for the wicked however, as Good Angels turned up the next day to meet the undefeated Latvian TTT Riga at their home court. In yet another extremely tight game showcasing the fierce competition, Good Angels brought home a vital 2 point victory. In a quick turnaround of form, Allen was one of the best on the court with 18 points.

In the Slovakian league, Good Angels had no issues in beating Slovan, totalling a massive 106 to just 28. Allen was kept fresh but still managed 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Being able to secure 3 straight wins in 1 week is a massive effort, especially when two of those games are important EEWBL matches. Their talented roster is performing exceptionally well, with an impressive 5 wins in a row to ensure they remain on top of the Slovakian ladder.

Following their loss to Good Angels, Tess Madgen’s AZS UMCS’ side had a day out against Avangard. They demolished the bottom ranked side 71-39, as Tess Madgen enjoyed some rest time. The Aussie still managed to contribute 7 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists, showing what a real asset she is to this team no matter what.

In the Polish league, there were no surprises that they were successful over JAS FBG 68-54, where Madgen performed well with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

In Turkey, Nat Hurst’s side Hatay had an honourable loss to the highly ranked Abdullah Gul by 1 point. The 11th ranked Hatay meant business, and weren’t going to let Abdullah Gul run over them easily. Hurst was one of Hatay’s strongest, bringing in 10 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. For a point guard to play 45 minutes of game time and only have 1 turnover is a real testament to the Australian point guard’s ability.

However Hatay was able to secure their first win in Euroleague against CCC Polkowice by 10 points. Hurst dominated, top-scoring for the match with 19 points, accompanied by 4 rebounds. This win ensures Hatay are one game ahead of CCC Polkowice on the Group B standings of Euroleague.

Lattes Montpellier secured a great Euroleague win against the higher ranked Famila Schio. It was just a 3 point victory, but it was a solid win for Montpellier against a real quality outfit. The entire Montpellier side had solid contributions, with Aussie Rachel Jarry bringing in 9 points.

Over in Hungary, Cayla George and UNIQA Sopron continue to dominate, this time against ZTE NKK in a 20 point victory. Providing 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals in a standout game was George who had the second highest score for her team.

Uniqa Sopron secured another great win in the Euroleague to bring themselves up in the standings to sit at the number 4 spot in Group B. George was solid with 9 points in their 77-68 win over Perfumerias Avenida.

In good news, Dynamo Moscow were able to break their 5 game losing streak in the Russian league and bring home a win in the EEWBL against Vega. Alex Bunton was brilliant, second-top scoring for the match with 20 points alongside 5 rebounds.

However Dynamo Moscow’s dominance in the EEWBL was quickly put an end, as Basket Gdynia secured a 3 point victory over them the following day. It was again a solid effort from Bunton with 10 points and 9 rebounds, and it was also pleasing to see Katie Rae Ebzery make the most of her opportunity with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

Tarbes broke their series of consecutive losses against Angers, overcoming the french side 74-53. Abby Bishop provided endless highlights in a brilliant game, totalling 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists.

Steph Talbot was one of ASZ Gorzow’s best in their loss to Wisla Can-Pack, as the Australian guard picked up 17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Alongside her, Nicole Seekamp picked up 5 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists in a solid game for the young point guard.
