Melbourne’s inner suburbs will this weekend once again play host to the Prahran Summer Jam (PSJ), Australia’s original streetball tournament.
Ten of Australia’s best streetball teams will take to the court at Prahran Park on Sunday, 10 February to play off for bragging rights and a cool $10,000 cash prize. The women do not miss out either, with the Under Armour 3×3 event set to boast some of Australia’s best female talent play off in the shorter for of the game for a $3,000 cash prize.
Described as one of most unique cultural events on the basketball calendar, the festival is a collaboration between MSF Sports and PSJ, bringing together athletes, artists and creatives to collectively stage the biggest streetball tournament in the southern hemisphere.
PSJ General Manager David Coles was looking forward to delivering the biggest PSJ event to date.
“A lot of hard work from the team and Summer Jam family has gone into making this years event bigger and better than ever before,” shared Coles.
“We are proud to announce some new partnerships and really grateful for the extended team, and all the support coming in from all angles of the community that make this event what it is. PSJ is the definition of Melbourne’s multicultural community coming together as one.
The 2019 edition will not only feature some of Australia’s best streetballers battling it out on court, live DJ’s, emcee’s, a market, food trucks and beer garden will add to what is already an electric community atmosphere. The slam dunk contest feature internationally acclaimed French dunker Guy Dupay who will be looking to go one better than Jordan Kilganon’s awe-inspiring performance last year as he seeks out the $1,000 cash prize on offer. Slam dunk judges will include former NBL players Brett Rainbow, Darryl McDonald and Area 51 – Melbourne’s infamous YouTube dunking sensation.
With so many activities literally jammed into a action-packed day, Coles reminisced about the growth of the event which launched seven years ago.
“The Prahran Summer Jam started in 2012 as a community initiative,” said Coles. “This is an event that has grown organically with the support of the community, for the community every year. From a local BBQ tournament, to a national basketball festival; there is nothing quite like the Prahran Summer Jam in Australia and we’re ready and excited for this Sunday.”
