Newley impresses as Gran Canaria win in Eurocup
Brad Newley was in outstanding form helping Gran Canaria to a dominating win over Hapoel Jerusalem in Eurocup. In the Euroleague, Ryan Broekhoff continued his string of excellent performances, going perfect from the field and helping Lokomotiv come out with the victory.
As round 6 of the Euroleague top 16 came to a start, Lokomotiv Kuban took on Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul. Lokomotiv would come out looking to go up by a wide margin early, going into halftime with a commanding 44-28 lead.
They would continue scoring at will after the main break, thanks to a hot shooting night from the team hitting 53% of their shots from the field and shooting 43% from the three-point line. This helped propel them to victory with the final score 82-58.
Ryan Broekhoff’s defense was on display as he was a key contributor in holding their Turkish opponents to 27% shooting from behind the arc. He finished the game with 10 points on a perfect 3/3 field goal attempts.
Zalgiris Kaunas looked to pull out an upsetting win over FC Barcelona's’ star-studded roster. Looking to demonstrate that they can compete with the best in the competition, they opened up an early 19-16 lead. However Barcelona would answer back with a strong second quarter, outscoring their opponents and going into halftime up 38-31.
Zalgiris would fight back in the second half, showing off some excellent play in the final quarter. But Barcelona's’ high powered offense would prove to be too much, allowing them to shoot 60% from the field and in turn that came back to hurt them as they lost the game 92-86.
Brock Motum didn’t get to play much, seeing only 8 minutes of action on the night. He was held scoreless, but grabbed 2 rebounds in what was an unusual game for the Aussie forward.
Round 5 of the Eurocup last 32 came to a start with Herbalife Gran Canaria taking on Hapoel Jerusalem. Coming out of the gates, Gran Canaria looked to make a statement, dominating the first quarter as they went ahead 31-12. They could continue piling on the points going into halftime up 58-25.
In the second half, Gran Canaria looked to continue putting their foot on the gas as they stretched the lead and ultimately went on to win it, with the final score 108-61.
Brad Newley was in amazing form finishing the game +37 in plus/minus, also adding 14 points (6/9 FG), 3 steals and 2 assists on the night in 23 minutes of playing time. He did a good job hounding Hapoel Jerusalems’ guards, preventing them from getting off open looks at the basket.
CAI Zaragoza came away with a win over Szolnoki Olaj 80-70 helping punch their ticket to the next round of the Eurocup. To start the game the Hungarian opposition showed some fight, going up 26-17. However, that would be the last time they lead as Zaragoza's’ offense started coming to life as they outscored their opponents the final three-quarters. They’d shoot 53% from the field, which allowed them to come out as victors.
Isaac Fotu had a quiet game scoring only 5 points on 1/4 shooting from the field and getting his hands on one steal in 15 minutes of action.
