Euroview: Broekhoff, Madgen and Dillon continue to flourish
In the VTB United League, Ryan Broekhoff’s double-double helped propel Lokomotiv Kuban to victory over Vita Tbilisi while Daniel Dillon and Ben Madgen also continued to flourish in Europe.
Lokomotiv Kuban came out as winners in dominating fashion over last placed Vita Tbilisi, with the final score 121-71. Ryan Broekhoff was on fire from behind the arc hitting 5-8 three-point attempts on the night. He was everywhere in this game, creating plays for his teammates as he added 7 assists and dominating the glass with 11 rebounds (5 offensive) and scoring a game-high 23 points (8-11 FG) in 29 minutes of action. He was the key player in propelling Lokomotiv to their 10th victory in a row in the VTB United League.

Daniel Dillion led PGE Turow to victory over Siarka, finishing the game with 19 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. He hit an efficient 7-11 field goal attempts and also made one triple on the night. PGE Turow looked flat, as they started the game trailing 30-18. However PGE started to look like a different team across the final three quarters, outscoring Siarka as they went on to win the game 94-80.
Voo Wolves Verviers-Pepinster lost their second game in a row in a tough loss to Okapi Aalstar. Ben Madgen was the lone bright spot for Pepinster, scoring a game-high 22 points on 9/16 shooting from the field. He also made three shots from behind the arc and pitched in 3 steals on the night, showing his defensive presence. Okapi Aalstar came out of the gates strong outscoring Verviers-Pepinster the first three-quarters. However Pepinster looked to respond with a strong fourth quarter showing outscoring their opponents 25-22, but it wouldn’t be enough. The hole they’d dug themselves into early was too much for them to climb back, allowing Okapi Aalstar to come out with the win 85-70.

In Spain, Brad Newley and Herbalife Gran Canaria went agonisingly close to winning the Copa Del Rey title. Gran Canaria earned a mighty 83-78 win against Valencia to qualify for the final. Newley would play 20 minutes for 4 points and 2 rebounds as he also celebrated his 31st birthday. Up against Real Madrid in the final, Gran Canaria pushed their more highly credentialed opponents all the way. It was a tight contest from the start, and both teams traded blows until the end. While Gran Canaria was shooting well from beyond the arc (43%), Real Madrid was doing their damage in the paint (54%). Real Madrid's size advantage saw them dominate the glass 43-32 and allowed them to edge ahead 85-81. Newley again played his role, adding 8 points and 2 rebounds in 20 minutes in a performance that is sure to drive their Eurocup and ACB campaigns.

In the Paris Disneyland Leaders Cup in France, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne faced Chalon in the semi final. After a close opening, Chalon managed to edge ahead at the main break to lead by 8 points. From there, they continued to motor away to record a convincing 91-70 win. For ASVEL, David Andersen recorded 10 points and 3 rebounds in a game where ASVEL were totally outplayed. ASVEL will be looking to now regroup as they make a run towards the French Pro A finals.
In the Spanish second division, Union Financiera Oviedo took on Planasa Navarra in what was a nail-biter from start to finish. Both teams would need overtime in order to find the winner and Planasa would look to do just that, outscoring Oviedo 8-7 in overtime, which allowed them to come away with the win 89-88. Dan Trist would come off the bench scoring 6 points (2/3 FG) grabbing 2 rebounds and getting 1 steal in 20 minutes of action. He did his best in trying to get Oviedo the win, however it wasn’t enough.

Mitch McCarron had a strong showing as he helped Palencia get the win over Prat Juventud 94-63. McCarron would get the start and show it was well earned finishing the game with 15 points (5/10 FG) and 3 steals in 33 minutes of action. Palencia dominated their opponents shooting an absurd 63% on the night. They also forced Juventud to shoot tough jump shots all game, holding them to 37% shooting from the field. In the end it was almost a perfect game for Palencia as they came away as winners in dominating fashion.
