EuroView: Andersen leads ASVEL Basket to victory
David Andersen helped ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne stamp their ticket to the FIBA Europe Cup round of 16, as they came away with a win over Krka Novo Mesto. Over in the Eurocup Isaac Fotu had a big game, leading CAI Zaragoza to a decisive win over Galatasaray Odeabank.
Kicking off round 5 of the Euroleague top 16 Lokomotiv Kuban took on Unicaja Malaga. From the start both teams looked evenly matched as they continued trading leads, but to no prevail as they sit tied 16-16. However, Lokomotiv would come out with a strong second quarter allowing them to go into halftime up 34-32.
In the second half Lokomotiv continued putting their foot on the gas, as they looked to go up by an even wider margin. A strong showing in the final two quarters would allow them to do just that, as they went on to win the game 82-64.
Ryan Broekhoff had a quiet showing, scoring only 8 points (3/7 FG) and grabbing 3 rebounds. Yet he found other ways to contribute, by playing good defense and hustling for rebounds.

Zalgiris Kaunas faced CSKA Moscow, in what was a blowout win for the Russian opposition. From tip-off CSKA came out as the aggressor taking a commanding 26-11 lead, and going into halftime up 44-29.
In the second half CSKA continued scoring at will; Zalgiris had no answer to stopping their high-power offense, and in the end that came back to hurt them, losing the game 94-59. CSKA shot 53% on field goal attempts on the night, that’s an unacceptable amount of shots made. If Zalgiris plan on getting another win anytime soon they better hope to step up their defensive play.
CSKA’s defense didn’t allow anyone to go off and Brock Motum was no exception as he scored only 2 points in 12 minutes of playing time.

Round 4 of the Eurocup last 32 came to a start as CAI Zaragoza took on Galatasaray Odeabank. To start the first half both teams would go back and forth as they looked to find an edge. However, Zaragoza would go into the main break up with a slight lead (42-39.)
In the second half Zaragoza looked to carry over some of the momentum as they started playing better on both ends of the floor. Galatasaray would start to fall behind because of that, as Zaragoza took commanding 66-47 lead. An in the end they were able to come away as victors, with the final score 85-68.
New Zealand’s Isaac Fotu played well, scoring 14 points (6/7 FG) and helping Zaragoza outscore their opponents by 10 points in his 20 minutes of action. His stats would have been even more inflated, had he played in the fourth quarter, but there wasn’t a need for that as they lead by so much.

Herbalife Gran Canaria played Strasbourg IG, in what started out as a game of tug a war, with both teams going on their runs. However Gran Canaria would go up by 4 points, (25-21) and they’d continue holding on to the lead, going into halftime ahead 40-36.
In the second half both teams would continue fighting to gain an advantage, however, Gran Canarias’ defense would propel them to victory as they held Strasbourg to 35% shooting from the field. Allowing Gran Canaria to come out with the win 79-68.
Brad Newley was the glue that kept everything together, as he played stifling defense all game. He finished the game scoring 2 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing one assist and getting his hands on one steal in 21 minutes of playing time.

David Andersen got his second double-double in the FIBA Europe Cup, as he led ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne to their 5th win in the competition. Taking on Krka Novo Mesto, Asvel came out taking the lead early, as they went up 21-18. Krka fought back in the second quarter but Asvel would still go into halftime up 35-30.
With the start of the third quarter Asvel looked to clamp down on defense, holding Krka to 5 points in the period. That would come back to hurt them as they lost the game 67-51. Asvel’s defense was on display all game holding their foe to only 34% shooting on the night.
David Andersen was a +18 in plus/minus when on the court, finishing the game with 13 points on an efficient 5/9 field goal attempts, and hauling in 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of playing time.
