Central ABL Round 1: West Adelaide and Southern Tigers claim opening sweeps
Welcome to the Central ABL weekly wrap up. Here we will provide you access to the round's results from both the men's and women's competitions.
Southern Tigers v Central District Lions
Women: Southern Tigers 81-70 Central District Lions
The Tigers weathered a first quarter storm by the Lions in order to open their account in 2014 with an opening round victory. Both Shayde Quintrell and Jade Barber were influential in the win registering 30 points, 8 rebounds and 12 points, 14 rebounds respectively.
For Central District it was Brianna Wedding who had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals in the loss.
Men: Southern Tigers 99-84 Central District Lions
Despite a sub-par third quarter, the Southern Tigers flew home to drop 31 final quarter points and put the Central District Lions out of reach in their win on the weekend.
For the Tigers it was Sam McDaniel who led the team with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists in an all round game.
In the loss, Kyle Miller scored 27 points to go along with 9 assists plus Chris Clausen had his own personal night with 29 points and 8 rebounds for the Lions.

Sturt Sabres v Norwood Flames
Women: Sturt Sabres 44-80 Norwood Flames
Last year’s champs, Norwood kicked off exactly where they left, extinguishing Sturt early and cruising through the contest.
Hannah Richards had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Sturt, while a combined team effort across the board was available for Norwood as no one player took the bulk of the offensive work.
Jess Foley had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in her 25 minute stint.
Men: Sturt Sabres 100-98 Norwood Flames
The Sturt Sabres has registered the competitions first overtime victory of the season with their 100-98 win over the Flames.
In a free throw fuelled extra period, the Sabres connected on all nine of their attempts to pinch the win in front of their home crowd.
Garry Moore dropped 22 points and 9 rebounds for Sturt, while Keith Krause had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Flames.
In what was the Pick and Roll’s men’s player of the round, Todd Matthews registered 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals in the losing effort.
West Adelaide Bearcats v Eastern Mavericks
Women: West Adelaide Bearcats 78-64 Eastern Mavericks
Despite a below average final quarter by the Bearcats, the damage had already been done as West Adelaide ran out easy winners on the weekend.
Kate Shierlaw shot 64% from the floor to finish with 25 points in a standout effort. For the visitors Emma Hooley registered 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Men: West Adelaide Bearcats 95-74 Eastern Mavericks
The men for West Adelaide made it a clean sweep on their home floor to start the season with a dominating win against the Mavs. Despite a tight opening half, the floodgates opened after the main break with the ‘Cats defence coming into full effect, allowing only 27 points in the final 20 minutes.
Blake Truslove was everywhere for West Adelaide, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Curtis Scipio fought hard all evening to keep his Mavs in the game, however his 23 points and 5 assists were not enough to keep the margin close.
Woodville Warriors v North Adelaide Rockets
Women: Woodville Warriors 67-83 North Adelaide Rockets
A stinging defensive effort in the fourth period has given the Rockets an opening round victory away from home in hope of returning to the top two this season.
Giving up only 13 points in the final quarter, it was enough for the home crowd to be disgruntled that their team couldn’t keep up with last year’s runners up.
Jo Hill scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds on her constant efforts to get to the rim, making all nine of her free throw attempts.
Carmen Reynolds tried to get the home side going with 21 points and 10 rebounds of her own, however it wasn’t enough to peg back the deficit.
Men: Woodville Warriors 83-55 North Adelaide Rockets
Woodville plastered the Rockets on opening night with a dominating display of brute force, doing what they pleased on their home floor.
Alex Starling energised the home crowd with 23 points and 11 rebounds in the team’s strong effort to close out every quarter and romp home to the finish line.
Forestville Eagles v South Adelaide Panthers
Women: Forestville Eagles 62-82 South Adelaide Panthers
The Eagles were unable to secure the points against a determined Panthers outfit that are looking to climb the table in 2014 after a disappointing season a year ago.
South Adelaide duo Janae Howard (30 points, 15 rebounds, 4 steals) and Teresa Kinross (30 points, 7 rebounds) starred as the Pick and Roll’s women’s player of the round as both players share the spoils this week.
Men: Forestville Eagles 97-61 South Adelaide Panthers
In the final game of the round, the Eagles men easily took care of the South Adelaide Panthers in their cruising 97-61 victory.
Jake Rios was the round’s top scorer with 33 points in the 38 minute effort. For the visitors, Brad Reid was their best, registering 15 points and 14 rebounds.
