Boomers Broekhoff and Newley catch fire from three
Australian Boomers Brad Newley and Ryan Broekhoff were on fire, showing off their shooting touch from behind the arc in Eurocup and Euroleague, while in the FIBA Europe Cup, David Andersen posted yet another double-double.
Lokomotiv Kuban took on Cedevita Zagreb in what started out with the Russian opposition taking a commanding 29-12 early lead. Cedevita would fight back with a strong second quarter showing outscoring their opponents 21-15, yet Lokomotiv would still lead going into halftime ahead 44-27.
In the second half Lokomotiv continued piling on the points and scoring at will. Thanks to that offensive output, it would allow them to cruise victory with the final score 87-63. Ryan Broekhoff finished the game with 14 points (4/7 FG) 3 rebounds and 2 assists on the night. He proved to be too much to handle for Cedevita, hitting 4/6 three-point attempts. Broekhoff’s presence was felt for much of the game as Lokomotiv outscored their Croatian foe by 16 points in his 23 minutes of playing time.

Zalgiris Kaunas faced Laboral Kutxa Vitoria in round 5 of the Euroleague top 16. From tip-off, Zalgiris looked to gain some momentum quick, taking an early 7-0 lead. They continued outscoring the Spanish side through two-quarters as they lead 53-45, but Zalgiris wouldn’t show up when it counted most scoring only 12 points in the final quarter and giving up 26 points to their opponents. Allowing Laboral Kutxa to come out with the win 71-65. Brock Motum added 6 points and made one three-pointer on the night to go with 4 rebounds (2 offensive) and 1 assist in 20 minutes of action. Motums' defense was on display all game as he did a good job creating turnovers (2 steals) and forcing the opposing big men into taking contested shots.

Brad Newley was in outstanding form in Herbalife Gran Canaria’s one-sided victory over Limoges CSP. His defensive presence was on full display all game allowing Gran Canaria to hold Limoges to 38% shooting from the field, which in turn helped them come out with the win 82-65. Newley finished the game scoring 15 points on a perfect 6/6 field goal attempts, he also showed off his shooting skills from behind the arc hitting three triples on the night. The Boomers well-rounded play would allow Gran Canaria to outscore their opponents by 11 points in his 22 minutes of action.

CAI Zaragoza came away as winners in competitive game that was a close through four quarters of action. Dolomiti Energia Trento would come out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they took the lead 28-18. However CAI Zaragoza looked to fight back with a strong showing in the second and third quarter allowing them to go up 70-68. The final period would be no different then the rest of the game as both teams continued battling it out. The game would come down to the final seconds with Zaragoza having the chance to win it and Thomas Bellas would do just that as he stepped up hitting the clutch basket, allowing Zaragoza to come out with the win 85-83.
Isaac Fotu finished the game with 2 points and 4 rebounds. Despite what the box score says, Fotu played well as he showed off his versatility for a big man with his passing skills, finding his teammates for lob passes leading to alley-oops. His defense was also on display for much of the game as he hounded the opposition and prevented them from scoring, his efforts would end up being key in Zaragoza’s close win.

David Andersen logged yet another double-double in ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne’s loss against the Antwerp Giants. He was in fine form, scoring 14 points on 6/13 shooting from the field and also hauling in 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action. His shooting touch for a big man was also on display as he hit two shots from behind the arc. ASVEL looked to be the stronger team for much of the game outscoring their opponents through the first three periods. However a fourth quarter collapse in which the Antwerp Giants outscored ASVEL 29-6 allowed Antwerp to come out on top, with the final score 88-78. ASVEL now sits 0-2 in their playoff series against the Antwerp Giants so let’s hope they can get their first win in the next meeting.
